Ad hoc

“Ad hoc” is a Latin phrase that literally means “for this” or “for this purpose”. In English, it describes something created or done for a specific, immediate need or purpose, rather than being a pre-planned or general solution.
- For a specific purpose: An “ad hoc committee,” for example, is formed to address a single issue, not to handle all company matters.
- Spontaneous or unplanned: It can also mean something is done on the fly, “as needed,” or without prior planning.
- Examples in use:
- An “ad hoc” network connects devices directly without a central access point, useful in disaster situations.
- A company might provide “ad hoc” training on a new software system as soon as it’s implemented.
- A business might hold an “ad hoc” meeting to discuss a sudden problem.
