Video formatting guidance
GymOS uses the widely used MP4 format. This format is compatible across a range of devices, including PC’s, Apple Macs, iOS phones & tablets, and Android phones & tablets. Other formats, such as MOV, are only playable if the end-user has installed additional software and often don’t work properly in mobile apps.
If your video is already in MP4 format, you can upload it directly into GymOS. GymOS will attempt to extra the first frame as a thumbnail for the video.
If your video is in a format other than mp4, such as MOV, you will need to convert your video before you upload it. There are numerous free and easy ways to do this, with examples below.
Converting your video
You only need to convert your video if it is either not in mp4 format, or if the file size is larger than 1Gb and you need to shrink the file;.
There are various free options for converting your video, including:
- If you have a Vimeo account, you can upload your video into Vimeo. Vimeo will then convert this into mp4 format, which you can then download. We recommend you download in 1080p, 720p or 360p formats (in that order of preference). You can then upload your converted video directly into GymOS.
- Handbrake is a free, open-source video converter. They provide versions for both PC and Mac. We recommend Handbrake as the best way to convert videos from other formats to MP4 and reduce the size of large videos. When saving your MP4 file, make sure the file extension is .mp4 (not .mpv)
- Google search offers dozens of other options and products for converting videos to mp4 format. Before selecting, ensure you are confident that the site/product is legitimate. If in doubt, we recommend one of the above two options.
