Using merge fields in messages

When sending email, SMS or push messages via the Message Centre or Scheduled Broadcasts, there are a number of merge fields that you can use within your messages.

What is a merge field?

A merge field is a placeholder element that is replaced by contextually relevant content when a message is sent. For example, this could be [[MEMBER.FIRSTNAME]], which is then replaced with the member’s first name when the message is sent to them.

There are four sets of fields relevant to generic messages sent from GymOS, plus a vast number of additional fields that become relevant when used in Triggers, Nurture Programs, or other areas of the system that send messages.

  • BUSINESS
The business fields provide fill-in data relating to your business.
  • CURRENTUSER
You (the sender) are the “current user”. The current user fields are the same as the member fields, but contain the data relating to the sender as opposed to the recipient.
  • MEMBER
If you are sending a message to a member, the “member” merge fields are available and contain data relating to the recipient.
  • LEAD
If you are sending a message to a lead, the “lead” merge fields are available and contain data relating to the recipient.

Note: If you are sending a message to both members and leads, use the member name fields. The lead’s name will also be populated into the [[MEMBER.FIRSTNAME]] and [[MEMBER.LASTNAME]] fields.

The pre-defined merge fields for the four aforementioned types are listed below.

Common merge fields are typically provided in a drop-down selection list when creating a message. The more advanced merge fields are added by cutting-and-pasting or typing them manually into your message.

Note: Clicking on any of the merge fields in this help document will add it to your clipboard for easy pasting into your message.

Don’t be that person…

Make sure you don’t mix up the [[CURRENTUSER]] and [[MEMBER]] merge tags! You don’t want to be the person who sends out a “personalised message” that starts Dear John and ends From John. It isn’t a good look, and whilst everyone knows merge fields are used in messaging, it gives the appearance of not caring.
